Henna Virkkunen, Vice-President of the European Commission responsible for digital affairs, highlighted an important and timely concern on June 3, 2026: Europe’s strong dependence on foreign technology – especially U.S. cloud services.
The key message is striking:
· As much as 80% of Europe’s digital solutions rely on foreign providers
· The U.S. Cloud Act allows data to be accessed from outside the EU
· In extreme situations, an external party may have the ability to shut down critical services (“kill switch”)
That is why the EU is now purposefully pursuing:
· Keeping critical data under European control
· Ensuring uninterrupted operation of digital services without external risks
· Reducing dependency on individual vendors
